As lots of us sent our children off to school yesterday, and waited anxiously for their return, I couldn’t help but think about the children of Beslan. It is 6 years ago since the horrific siege ended there, with the loss of at least 334 hostages including 186 children. Approximately 783 were injured including 221 children. Adults and children alike killed in the most horrific way, with the survivors having witnessed scenes that are unimaginable to the rest of the world. The events of that day will be remembered by many around the world, but for the children who survived, and the families of those lost, this time of year must be devastating. What is even more disturbing is that some of the people who carried out such an evil attack on the most defenceless of people, school children, may still be at large today. They will have enjoyed a summer, maybe have shared it with their loved ones or children of their own. Whilst the terror or what happened on that day still haunts the victims, and will continue to do so for the rest of their lives, life for the terrorists will go on. The fact that women [...]

We get a lot of worried Mums and Bridesmaids calling, asking for advice on lacing up the wedding dress on the big day. So I thought we would put together an easy to follow guide, for anyone worrying about how to do it correctly, and stress free. As with any preparation, the key starting point is always the same. Leave plenty of time, and wash your hands first. This may sound ridiculous, but we have heard of many dresses being foundation stained, because the person doing the lace-up has done her own make-up first. This, combined with the natural oils on your fingers can make the ribbon look grubby. So always make sure your hands not only look clean, but are freshly washed. I would allow 30 minutes for a mum or bridesmaid to lace-up a dress correctly, without causing stress. The idea of a lace-up back is to ease the bride in to her dress, no squeeze her in. If it is done gently, and gradually it allows the skin to find its natural level, and not be pushed over the top of the corset. Don’t be too rough, be gently, but don’t be afraid to be firm when [...]

I was contacted earlier this week by a lady called Rachael, who is an independent shoe dyer, with over 20 years experience. She dyes any make of bridal shoe, including some High Street brands. Lots of bridal shoes companies do provide this service, but more and more are moving away from dyeing, preferring to have their pre-dyed shoes on sale. With Colours Unlimited, Rachael says that you simply send her your silk or satin shoes or handbag, with a swatch of the material you want to match, and they will recreate and blend the shade you have chosen in their professional colour studio. If you don’t have a colour swatch available, the send them a cotton reel of the appropriate colour, or visit your local DIY store, and pick up a colour chart. (This is a great tip for fascinator matching too). Always ensure your send your shoes by Courier or Recorded / Special delivery. This service is only for Silk and Satin uppers, and they can not dye any other fabrics. You can contact Rachael directly on 01782 643043 to discuss your requirements, or email her coloursunlimited@aol.com Post this to MySpaceShare this on FacebookTweet This!Email this to a [...]

At Savvy Cinderella I am very lucky to meet lots of lovely people, from all walks of life. Many of my clients have businesses that are useful to other brides to be, or they recommend other suppliers to me because of the excellent service they have received. That means when I recommend a supplier, I have had dealings with them on a personal level, or I know of satisfied customers who are happy to share their recommendations. I met with the lovely Nicola Fowler yesterday, from Mooi, a wonderful new floristry business. I met Nicola earlier this year, as we have both been involved in a couple of weddings recently. I have been told by a number of people how wonderful her floral arrangements are, and I have seen for myself her work in the wedding photo’s that I have seen after the wedding. Nicola has flowers in her blood. She hails from good Dutch stock, and her knowledge of flowers, foilage, the colours available and the seasons they are available in is very extensive. Mooi is Dutch for ‘Beautiful’, and sums up her work perfectly. As a recent bride herself, Nicola really understands her clients. What I found so [...]

I was talking to my lovely client Rachel a few weeks ago about the first dance of the wedding, and she was asking if I knew of anyone who would teach a couple with absolutely no dancing experience, how to get through it in one piece. I didn’t know of anyone then, but I do now. The first dance is an important one, and one that many couples worry about, especially the men. After all, when does anyone ‘dance in the old fashioned way’ anymore? So by getting tuition, the nerves are lessened and the confidence increased, and you are armed well for future events where a formal dance may be required. The celebrity dance shows have made this type of dancing much more popular, and seeing tough rugby players doing it, has made the average man on the street more comfortable with tripping the light fantastic. Just this morning a lovely bride2be and her family were here, and her recently married sister was telling me that she did dance classes for her first dance. Both her and her husband found it great fun, and really enjoyed it. She said it gave her something to focus on too, and she [...]

Savvy Cinderella is back to work now, after our short closure for our own wedding celebrations. Last week we flew to Bergen, before taking a ferry north, to a lovely village on the edge of one of the most beautiful Fjords I have ever seen. We were there to celebrate the marriage of our eldest son, Kieren, to his beautiful bride Marte. Regular visitors to my blog will know that this lovely couple married last August, in Gibraltar. Just the two of them attended, and they had a perfect wedding day. However, they wanted to celebrate their marriage with family, so decided to have the reception nearly a year later, in Norway, when everyone could get together. So a party was organised near the family home and the British contingent crossed the North Sea to join in the celebrations. As I have said before, there are no ugly people in Norway until we arrive. Marte must gets a special dispensation from the Norwegian Government to allow us in for a few days. All Norwegians are stunning, but Marte’s family seem to even outshine them. All are stunningly beautiful and outstandingly intelligent, but what was so surprising, is that they are [...]

It has been another busy week here, and a record day today for collections for wedding dresses, with brides traveling not just across the country, but across the world to get married. I always like to see the pictures of the weddings that take place, and Dyll and I really enjoy seeing the outcome of all our work, so it is really lovely when our brides take the time and trouble to bring us in, or post and email us their photo’s. It is an easy thing to say that we would like to see your pictures, but we really do mean it. It gives us such a wonderful sense of achievement, to see our clients looking so beautiful on their day, knowing that we played a small part in helping them find the right dress. I have had three brides take the trouble of bringing their photo’s over to me this week, and all have been so thrilled with the way their day turned out. The pictures all show happy, smiling brides in beautiful dresses, surrounded by loved ones. I always say that when you climb into bed at the end of your wedding day, as long as you [...]

It was a very busy week last week with press and radio interviews for the Savvy Cinderella/ASAP dress appeal. The local press excelled themselves, and did a full front page coverage of the story, for which I am very grateful. I hoped we would get a mention somewhere in the paper, but front page was more than I could have hoped for. The event was very stressful, as I am not one that likes having a picture taken, I shy away from photo’s on holiday, so the thought of the local paper didn’t sit easy with me. Luckily for me the wonderful Catherine was at hand to help, not only to help volunteer to sort dresses, but also to have a picture taken with them. I did agree to have mine taken with her in the end, but instantly regretted it, but I cleverly concealed 90% of myself behind a dress, so only unleashed my head on the unsuspecting public, and Catherine’s loveliness more than distracted people away from me. Then it was BBC Radio Cambridgeshire, with Sue Dougan. Again, I had hoped to get a mention for ASAP somewhere during the day, but Sue came over to Savvy Towers [...]

What a brilliant time to get married in the UK. An English Summer, complete with heatwave and heavy showers, fantastic food, including locally produced strawberries, and home made wine. You can’t beat a Great British Wedding. Guests always look stunning during the summer months, keen to show off their summer tans, the ladies arrive bronzed, buffed and waxed, manicured and pedicured and smelling devine. The men, all groomed and gorgeous with an ear out for the cricket/football scores. With weddings abroad being so popular, it is nice to see weddings taking place in the UK, making the most of the fantastic architecture and romance of the old churches, stunning hotels and registry office gardens. The summer flowers are beyond compare at this time of year too. Infact, all in all, you can not beat a British Wedding on a glorious summer day, but a word of warning, not many venues have air conditioning, and the result of our warm and sticky weather can have unpleasant side effects. We had reports from recent heatwave weddings of guests passing out due to heat exhaustion, violent headaches after guests exposed to long periods of time in the sun, linen dresses clinging to all [...]

The hostess of the best party will win a fabulous prize – a Holiday for yourself and up to three friends – giving you another reason to have a party, and all the party people partaking (try saying that on the night of your party) will have the best birthday video ever! Imagine how great that would be to have your party filmed by a professional film crew. If my 40th wasn’t so far away then I would definitely be signing up, but alas for me I [...]

I have been speaking to Alan, owner of Elizabeth Dickens veils, about what he would recommend as a perfect veil, with sparkle. We get lots of requests for veils to match dresses, and ‘with sparkle’ is often the number one description. As usual, Alan has come up trumps. He had lots of suggestions for me, but two were such perfect veils, that I think either of them would add extra wow to your whole look. The first is the Cerise. The detail on this veils is simply beautiful. It is perfect to add delicate sparkle to a dress. Framing the veil are little teardrop crystals, on the embroidered swirl and scolloped edge. The veil is perfect with a dress like the Eleni or Zeta by Romantica, as the detail is stunning, complimenting yet not competing with detail on the veil. Available in all the standard lengths, as well as the special request lengths, this veil is a really lovely choice, and a very good price. The Patience is also a veil with extra sparkle, but in totally a different way. The concentration of extra crystals around the top of the veil really makes it look as if your hair [...]

It is a busy time during the summer months for everyone in the wedding industry. Although the wedding industry is now busy all year round, May – August is still a very popular time to get married. I haven’t had time to watch Wimbledon – although I may record a match to cure my insomnia, and the football leaves me cold. I have heard the discussions on how the England team are performing, but ofcourse I won’t be watching a game. Its not that I am unpatriotic, it is because it is only a game of football. A game, that to the untrained eye (mine) is full of self serving people, who earn more money in a week than most hard working people do in many years. Earning it isn’t quite the right word, they are given a vast amount of money. They play a few games of football, and train a few days a week. They have first class travel, luxury hotels and spend money in vast amounts – on themselves and hangers on. Listening to John Terry talk about how bad it is for the team to be away from wives, girlfriends and children for so long was [...]

It has been so crazy here, with last minute weddings to attend to, as well as the ones planned with lots of time. The record for the most last minute wedding goes to a lady from somewhere in South London, who called me for the very first time this morning, wanting a wedding dress for her wedding tomorrow. I said that I was very busy today, but I would stay open late so she could come and try on some dresses, but it would have to be a case of ‘if it fits you can have it,’ as I can’t get alterations done on a Friday night for a wedding the next day. She then shouted at me for being situated too far away from her. “Didn’t I understand her wedding was tomorrow, she couldn’t travel all this way,”. She said she had other things to plan for tomorrow. I said I did understand, and I would help, but I wasn’t sure what she wanted me to do. She took a deep breath and said in an impatient voice ”I need a wedding dress, I am getting married at 12 noon tomorrow, but you are too far away for me [...]

It has been such a busy time recently, that I have completely overlooked the state of my hair. With steaming dresses ready to go out, and the recent heatwave, my hair looks like I have had a week in the Tropics, with that nasty ‘Frizzy’ that too much time on a hot tropical beach can bring – only I haven’t been anywhere half as exciting. The highlight of my week is if I manage to go out in my car with the roof down, and then ofcourse I end up looking even more frizzed and windswept, as well as pulling bugs out of my hair. So my poor hair has been punished recently, and was beginning to show the strain. My regular hairdresser has probably forgotten about me, as it has been so long since I have been, and she has always been brilliant. This week she was too busy to fit me in, and as it was a hairdressing emergency, as I had a free period over lunch, I had to look elsewhere. A lot of my local customers have recommended a local Salon, in March, called Spike and Violet, and as all of them had lovely hair, I [...]

I have certainly been kept busy here at Savvy Towers, with the launch of our new Savvy’s Ultimate Men’s hire service, Prom season, and of course what has seemed like the busiest wedding period ever. What has surprised me is the number of brides choosing to get married in record breaking time, many having less than 4 weeks to plan for the dress, and make all the other arrangements. Some having less than 2 weeks, and a couple choosing the dress a week before the wedding. One traumatised bride was very organised, choosing her dress last year, but on going to collect it from the ‘posh’ bridal store last week, just over a week before her wedding, was devastated to find it had been sold by mistake to someone else. Luckily we found her a lovely dress, and she loved it more than the original one, but it could have been a disaster for her. The Mens hire has been great. The brides2be is able to match up the colours of her bridesmaids with the grooms party, so we can narrow the choices down for the groom when he comes in. Rather than show him 30 waistcoats to choose [...]
